Russia

There are three names which are mentioned in the prophecy of Ezekiel 38, referring to the last day's, which are considered here. They are Rosh, Meshech and Tubal (Ezekiel 38:2) all of which can be directed to the geographical region of Russia. "Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him" Ezekiel 38:2

Rosh
It's important to note that some translations don't use the word Rosh. For example, if you're a reader of the Authorised Version (the King James Bible - KJV), then you'll note that it doesn't use the word "Rosh" at all, rather it renders Ezekiel 38:2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him. Of the times when Rosh is mentioned in Ezekiel, we know:

  1. that Rosh is a geographical area - Ezekiel 38:2
  2. that the Lord is against Rosh - Ezekiel 38:3
  3. That Rosh will come from the "far north" with a large and mighty army and will invade Israel - Ezekiel 38:15

Without any doubt, there are few countries which can be referred to as the "far North". Firstly, one must ask oneself, North of where? The answer can only be north of Israel as the overall message of Scripture revolves around Israel and its people, however also because the prophecy was given to Ezekiel, a prophet delivering his message to Israel, particularly to its southern Kingdom, Judah. Even if you were to consider such countries as Demark (owners of Greenland), Iceland and Canada, then we ought also to consider that this northern nation has a mighty and vast army which is in relative invading proximity to Israel. Due to an absence of Biblical references defining further where Rosh actually is located, the only avenue one has to expand on Rosh as geographic region is by scanning historic references. John Cumming in his work "The Destiny of the Nations" suggests that Rosh is a proper name as translated in the New King James Bible which refer to the Scythians: Rosh, which if taken as a proper name is the name of a portion of the Scythians from whom the modern Russians have their origin. The river Araxes which is the modern name, was called in Arabic, Rosh, and the people dwelling upon its banks were called by orientals Rosh. The Destiny of the Nations, John Cumming DD FRSE To expand on this further: The Scythians struggled with the Assyrians and Medes and were pushed back and settled north of the Black Sea. Crossing the Dniester, the Scythians advanced along the lower Danube¦ an additional advance brought them into Brandenburg. The Scythians reached Eastern Germany and Bavaria Penguin Atlas of World history Vol. 1 p20-21 (Map showing movement of Scythians throughout history) The word "Rosh"admittedly is used again and again in scripture for head or chief; but the construction of the text here has led the revisers as well as many other translators to take the word Rosh as indicating a country. It seems that Rosh then is really that land we know as Russia. Expository Notes on Ezekiel H.A. Ironside Gesenius Hebrew Chaldee Lexicon, from which the following is an extract, suggests that Rosh, along with Tubal and Meshech, are “undoubtedly the Russians. Hakon Stang, in his exhaustive secular work entitled The Naming of Russia published in Olso in 1996 by Oslo University, concludes that Rosh was ultimately one of the names that shaped the name of modern Russia via the Byzantines in AD839. There are clearly a number of historical documents both secular and religious which align Rosh with modern day Russia.

Meshech
In relation to the name Meshech that is used (Ezekiel 38:2), note the following references: They were in all probability the Moschi, a people inhabiting the Moschian Mountains, between the Black and the Caspian Seas. During the ascendency of the Babylonians and Persians in Western Asia, the Moschi were subdued; but it seems probable that a large number of them crossed the Caucasus range and spread over the northern steppes, mingling with the Scythians. There they became known as Muscovs, and gave that name to the Russian nation and its ancient capital by which they are still generally known throughout the East Eastons Bible Dictionary From the Moschian mountains, the Moschi moved north into the region which is now commonly known as Moscow. Proper name 'Moschi", a barbarous people inhabiting the Moschian mountains Gesenius Hebrew Lexicon

The celebrated historian Bochardt in his book "Sacred Geography", stated that Ros is the most ancient name under which history makes mention of the name of Russia. It is credible that from Rhos and Mesech (that is the Rossi and the Moschi) of whom Ezekiel speaks, descended the Russians, and the Muscovites.

Tubal
In relation to the name of Tubal, we note the following references: Thobel (Tubal) founded the Thobelites, who are now called Iberes Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Book 1, Chap VI, 1 Tiglath-pileser I, king of Assyria in about 1100 BC, refers to the descendants of Tubal as the Tabali. Their land, in Josephus' day, was called by the Romans Iberia, and covered what is now Georgia whose capital to this day bears the name Tubal as Tbilisi. From here, having crossed the Caucasus mountains, this people migrated due north-east, giving their tribal name to the river Tobol, and hence to the famous city of Tobolsk. Harold Hunt & Russel Grigg, The sixteen grandsons of Noah Tobolsk was the historic capital of Siberia and is now a largely ordinary town in Tyumen Oblast, Russia. In its peak it held the administrative divisions of the territory and remained the seat of the Governor-General of Western Siberia until it was moved to Omsk. Today, the industry of Tobolsk, situated on the River "Tubal", revolves around the oil and gas from the Western Siberian oil field which, while Tobolsk doesn't predominately feature in world politics, it's probable that due to its historic position of capital of Siberia, which forms the largest regions of Russia covering 56% of Russia's territory. The city's legacy remains today as many Siberian towns have their original coat of arms displaying the Tobolsk insignia. It's probable that Tobolsk will feature in the struggles of the last days due to its involvement in the oil and gas industry, that being such an integral part of the wars and political issues that the world faces. Summary In summary therefore, it is noted that:

  1. Rosh can be applied to Russia;
  2. Meshech can be applied to Moscow/Western Russia and the leadership there from;
  3. Tubal can be applied to Tobolsk/Eastern Russia and a large portion of the Russian territory.

In addition to religious writers, historians also recognize that the words Ros, Rosh, or Rus are connected with ancient Russia and some even go so far as to note the Biblical connection.

"The names of rivers derived from the root: rus, ros occurs over very wide expanses - In fact the Rus territory is supposed to have comprised lands extending from Poland to the Volges, and from Lake Ilmen to the Black Sea, the sea of Asav, and the Caspian Sea. But we might extend it even further, including in it the whole of Europe and even parts of other continents." The Origin of Russia, Henryk Paszkiewicz

"The Volga River is called Rhos by an anonymous Greek author of a geographic treatise compiled in the 5th century A.D. In his work entitled "The Origins of Russia" he makes the comment "The Biblical name 'Rosh' was in Greek pronounced 'Ros', identically with the name of the Russes (Ross)." Among the comments of the author on the life of the Russes, his statement that, "the Russes (Ros) are terrible not only by their deeds but also by their name", deserves attention. Presumably this is a reference to the Biblical Ros (Rosh). It should be noted that at the time of the Hunnic invasion 433, Patriarch Proclus had recalled Ezekiels prophecy (Ezekiel 38:2) concerning the Prince of Rosh. The author of the Life of St. George apparently followed the same tradition. In this case the Biblical reference sounded even more convincing, since the name of the invaders was actually identical with the Biblical name." Ancient Russia - Goerge Vernadsky
